Understanding the Library's News Services
The Library offers a variety of news services using content syndication.
What is content syndication ?
Content syndication is the process of producing content on a webpage and pushing that content by way of Extensible Markup Language (XML) protocols to anyone in the world who has an interest in reading that content. Of course, you might be thinking, "can't I just go to the webpage itself to read the content?" This is true; however, you have to physically go the the website each time to view it. If you have many favorite websites, then keeping up to date with them can be quite time-consuming. By taking advantage of content syndication, you don't have to actively do anything to read content; the content is fed to you, right into your browser or feed reader for you to browse.
How do I subscribe?
There are a number of different ways to subscribe to an RSS feed based on they type of RSS reader you choose to use. RSS readers come in a variety of types and many are free (view a comprehensive list of RSS readers). The type of reader you choose will depend on your platform and your chosen browser.
Browser-based RSS reader - Firefox Users -
for
Windows
Mac OS X
Linux
Firefox allows the easiest form of subscription through its browser-based, built-in RSS reader.
Beginners - The easiest way to subscribe is to use Firefox's auto-detect feature. Firefox automatically detects that the Library's webpage offers RSS feeds and indicates this with the
icon in the address bar of your browser
Choose the news you want to subscribe to from the drop down menu. This will open a dialog box asking you to add the link to your bookmarks.
Once you have added the feed to your bookmarks, viewing the file is as easy as clicking on a bookmark:

The news items for that day are shown to the right. Browse through the headlines and click on any of interest for more information.
Using Firefox's auto-detect works on many websites. Try www.cnn.com or www.wired.com and look for the
icon.
Advanced - There are a number of reasons you may want to use another type of Reader. Sage is an RSS Reader extension for Firefox that adds additional features that help you manage many news sources. To learn more about installing and using Sage read the article at WION.com
Firefox users may also want to use one of the web-based RSS readers mentioned below.
Web-based RSS readers - Any Browser - for
Windows
Mac OS X
Linux
If you are using a browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, that does not have integrated support for RSS feeds you can use a web-based RSS reader. Web-based RSS readers are websites where you can create an account to manage your RSS feeds. With a free account you can check your RSS feeds from any computer and any browser. This is valuable for people who telecommute, travel, or just want to synchronize their work and home news.
The Library has provided quick buttons to add the RSS feeds to three of the top web-based RSS readers; Bloglines, Google Reader, and Pluck. To sign up for any of these services visit their websites.

Note: Web-based RSS readers work for the following News Feeds: Glenn Research Center News, NASA News, and Science and Technology News.
Library News and Tips and New Books are both available only to internal GRC computers (or through VPN and RAS) and can not be read via web-based readers due to firewall restrictions. To subscribe to these news feeds use the RSS-enabled Firefox browser - available on all ODIN machines, or try a stand-alone program.
